The Renaissance
Hello everyone! As I mentioned earlier in my blog one of my most favorite subjects is history and learning all about happenings of the past and culture. This year one of my favorite subtopics studied in Individuals and societies was the Renaissance. Many of us have heard about the renaissance, but do we actually know it significance in our lives? During the medieval times, there was war, plague and destruction, due to which several people had lost their lives. Although many died and Europe was at great loss, this misfortune like most things in life, had a silver lining. Because of the deaths and loss people started to value life and its importance. They decided that the systems of their time were flawed, for if they weren't, they wouldn't be in their current position. Renaissance means rebirth and reawakening, and in this case, people wanted to bring back the inspiration from the ancient Greeks and Romans. The people moved towards Constantinople due to its abundance in the texts, wealthy merchants and most importantly rich city states. Instead of bringing back the ancient traditions a whole new one was created. One that encouraged people not only to idolize and love god and god only, but to love and see the beauty in oneself. This gave birth to "humanism." Ever since the 14th to the 17th century , the people of Europe witnessed wondrous creations, talents, inventions, people and, ideologies, and it was then, that people changed in many ways and had definitely given birth to a whole new way of life, thinking and a change of heart. Here is a poem I wrote which is an ode to many of the greats who lived in the period of the renaissance, and have changed our lives today. They lived with restrictions and people questioning everything they did but that did not stop them.
THE GREATS
After a period of faith and trust,
when people loved only the lord prayed,
A few greats came together and
“Its time some new rules are laid”.
“If we are the creation of the great god himself,
I’m sure we have some worth”,
Its time we focused upon our abilities some more
and prove the reason for our birth.
Leonardo DaVinci, was a jewel among many
and if there were someone as skilled as him I do not know of any.
He excelled at the sciences, poetry, inventing, mathematics and art
He believed in absolute perfection in his work
and that every minor detail played a part.
Copernicus and Galileo believed the sun was in the center,
And although they were absolutely right it make the priests run helter skelter.
“How dare those fools contradict us, and say that we are wrong"
Not to worry, for after we imprison Galileo in his abode, this problem won’t last long.
Galileo stared and gazed, while people thought he’d lost his mind
And after discovering the 4 moons of Jupiter the poor fellow went completely blind.
Dr Edward Jenner made a discovery oh so great,
that his discovery would help Europe, overcome its ill fate.
After extracting a bit of cow pox and injecting it into a child's skin,
Dr Edward Jenner had now found a cure, for all the diseases that had ever been!

Shakespeare on the other hand, embraced the world as his stage
He left people mesmerized and was the favorite of the Elizabethan Age.
Drama, romance and tragedy were the stars of his plays
“To be or not to be is the question, or so Shakespeare says”.

And so developments were made in ever so many fields,
And slowly one by one new ideologies were revealed.
Although the church disagreed and punished them many a times
The new beliefs and changes of the heart, compromised for the blatant crimes.
