Better than Paradise
Yesterday night I went to bed with a heavy heart. The reason being that the time had come, for my cousins to leave, and go back to their homes abroad. I have an extremely large family on my father's side and in all we are 9 first cousins. Ever since the year 2004-2010 children have been born in our family, 8 girls and 1 boy. I'm the second eldest with my cousin brother being a year elder than I am.
I believe that we should write about what we feel strongly about and this poem is all about the journey I take through my summer vacations with all the people who make it special. All my grandparents(my mom and dad's side) and everyone in my family. I obviously couldn't document everything that takes place but here are a few special things that mean a lot to me.
The months of June and July,
are months that I absolutely adore
And although every month is magical,
These two just have something more.
Vacations are finally here we sing
Where we can do absolutely ANYTHING
We'll have fun, and rules we shall bend
Weekdays too, will be like weekends.
As I boarded the plane and packed my bags,
I thought not of nausea or jet lag,
I dreamt of all the days to come,
where I'd be basking in the sun.
As I arrived at my grandparents' place
I saw beaming smiles across their face
I spent a glorious month there
Cooking and being pampered,
like there was no time to spare.
Soon, I arrived back home,
And rushed to my grandparents' house next door
what I saw there, filled me with joy,
to my very core
And left me thinking, that there was no way,
I could ever want more.
Suddenly, my heartbeat started to exceed its regular pace,
For in front of me, were my cousins, each one with their notorious face
3 of them are from abroad, so I don't see them as much,
But when we are together, we are an inseparable bunch.
Everyday was a whole new adventure,
everyone with an essential part
We love, hit, fight and play with one another,
But our love is unconditional, deep in our hearts.
My brother and I are the eldest,
and so it is our role to play pranks
To our disappointment, how much ever we trouble the younger ones
We still are held in the highest of ranks.
The midnight hour was definitely the most happening
For that's when we commenced all our partying
We quietly snuck in all the goodies and snacks
And plan a rendezvous behind the adults' backs.
You can't miss something you've not had at all,
And that's how I felt during winter, spring and fall
Until summer arrived and I was reminded,
Of the joy I feel when we cousins are re-united.
Finally it was time to say goodbye,
The air was filled with sentiments, as we tried not to cry
It's unfair we said, that we are so far apart
Even though we know we'll always be connected by heart
We said our final adieu's
"Have a safe trip, I'll really miss you".
I found, that I'm so lucky to realize
That my reality is better than paradise.
